Cst. Mason was a powerful athlete and a good hockey player. The pilot attempted to make an emergency landing when the plane clipped the tops of the trees bordering the runway. The plane crashed into the Courtenay River knocking out everyone on board. Cst. Mason was married to Carole and they had two children. He is buried in Royal Oak Burial Park, Victoria, BC.
