At the time of his death, Cst. Ekstrom had been posted to the Lytton Detachment for only three months. He died in a non-collision traffic accident while in the performance of duty near Lytton, British Columbia. Cst. Ekstrom was buried at Mount Memorial Gardens in Lethbridge, Alberta.

Commemorated on Page 101 of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Honour Roll Book.
