Cst. Macdonell was born in Alberta. He had family members who served as members of the NWMP, RNWMP, and the RCMP. Prior to joining the Force, Cst. Macdonell worked on survey crews with the Department of Public Works for Alberta. He was camping with S/Cst. Massan on a small island that was surrounded by ice. A sudden thaw and runoff quickly began to flood the island while they slept. They were unable to make it safely to shore.
