This memorial, a Second-World War era Sherman tank nicknamed "Forceful III", is dedicated to the memory of the member of the Governor General's Foot Guards killed during the Second World War while operating as an armoured regiment.
The American -made M4 Sherman tank was the workhorse of the Canadian Armoured Corps from 1943."Forceful III", an M4A4 Sherman tank of the Governor General's Foot Guards, landed in France in July 1944. Although damaged on several occasions, it was the regiment's only tank, of the 69 issued before D-Day, to fight through France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany without being put out of action. It was brought back to Canada in 1946.
The Forceful III Tank was placed in front of Cartier Square Drill Hall as a memorial shortly after its return from Europe in 1946. It remained in this location until about 2004 when the area in front of the drill hall was renovated and the tank relocated to the Canadian War Museum. The Forcefull III Plaque is located at the drill hall within the armoury.
