Monday, January 1, 1917 - At Hendon Flying. Staying at Hatherley House. Very ill. Doctor sent me to hospital. Rc'd letters from Mrs. Mellish, Mother, Vivian. I'm starting new year fine in hospital. 11:30 PM head paining, can't sleep.

Tuesday, January 2, 1917 - 10:30 In bed writing this. Dropped a note to Mary Throat very sore wrote Mr. Moore 10PM Awfully lonely tonight. Getting my mind a little more settled. Letter from John Fry at Willison Hotel. Three of the boys who tried exams with me were killed. Burt Doran very seriously injured flying first solo at Gosport. Feeling some better.

Wednesday, January 3, 1917 - woke 6:00 for temperature went to sleep to 9:00 Rc'd letter from Tina & card from Florence. Somebody called me on phone but unable to get out of bed to phone. Another R.F.C. officer & instructor burnt to death at Netherhaven.

Thursday, January 4, 1917 - Head aching Got up for hour Rc'd Xmas box from Can. Patriotic League & cigarettes from Grace Casey. Letter from Tommy Seales. Went to sleep 8:30pm.

Friday, January 5, 1917 - Feeling better Xmas card from Frances Depew. Went out 2:30 - 5:30 came in head aching badly. No mail in evening.

Saturday, January 6, 1917- Rose 2:00 PM went out for walk. Retired 9:00 PM. Still in hospital head bothering.

Sunday, January 7, 1917 - Rose 1:00 P.M. Feeling better Loused 15 min Retired 9:10 PM head still aching

Monday, January 8, 1917 - Rose 1:50 PM. Rc'd letters from Mother, Mary, JS Moore, Helen S. & Mrs. McIntyre. Drew £10 out of bank. Came back to hospital 5:00. Had tea 7:30 just writing to mother & Mary

Tuesday, January 9, 1917 - Rose 9:00 am. Discharged from hospital 10:00 am. Got 48 hours leave provisional 7 day every 48 hrs, report went to town with Lieut. Walton. We stopped at Regent Palace Hotel

Wednesday, January 10, 1917 - Rose 10:00 am. Had breakfast at Regent Palace. I met Sy in evening & we went to Picadilly Theatre. Slept at my room in Hendon. Went to Epsom afternoon but he was not in. Left word for him to meet me at Regent Palace.

Thursday, January 11, 1917 - Rose 10:00 Reported Granted 48 hrs more. Letters from Mother, Helen Sullivan, Frances Depew, Auntie Dominica. Met Sy & had dinner together. Stayed at Ritz Hotel. Did not meet Tommy Seales at Regent.

Friday, January 12, 1917 - Went to Epson 12.27 Met Tommy Seales & we had very enjoyable day. Stayed at Hotel in Epsom with Tommy

Saturday, January 13, 1917 - Tommy & I came to town. Came to Hendon & reported in, not going to Egysh with this draft. Put up at Imperial Hotel, Russell Square. Met Ethel Cooper 11 Claredon Gardens, Warwick Ave. Maida Vale, London. Tommy enjoyed himself fine. Letter from Mary & JS Dickson

Sunday, January 14, 1917 - Went to 12 o/c mass at Westminster. Spent afternoon (Tommy) together walking around Queen Annes & Buckingham Palace. Tommy left for Epsom & I left for Hundon 7:00PM Arrived 9 Retired 10:30

Monday, January 15, 1917 - Rose 8o/c Letter from Yale. No flying, up till 12 o/c

Tuesday, January 16, 1917 - Rose 8:00 Late for 9:00 am parade Must parade 8:00 in future. No flying Retired 10:00

Wednesday, January 17, 1917 - Paraded 8:00 & 9:00 Letter from T. Seales No flying. Retired early after going to see Father Lagore.

Thursday, January 18, 1917 - Rose 7:30 Parade 8:00 No mail Becoming more myself again. I went to Benediction & had a few words after with Pére Lagore. Had dinner 9:15 in mess thru "kindness" of "Peggy" Retired early.

Friday, January 19, 1917 - Rose 7:30 am Parade 8:00am Letter from Aunty Martha, Don & Katie, Carmalita, Grace Casey, Mary Higgins. No flying. Went to picture show by myself. 10:30 retiring wrote home, Lt Bellamy Lts Fry Doran Boon Cox & Co.

Saturday, January 20, 1917 - Rose 7:30 Parade 8:00 No flying Went to confession to Father Leghorn

Sunday, January21, 1917 - Rose 7:00 am went to 8:30 mass & Holy Communion. Met Mr. Wilson after Mass. Had breakfast at Hendon Golf Club. Stood by for flying all day but there was no flying. Retired 9:30

Monday, January 22, 1917 - Rose 8:00 am Breakfast Parade 9:00 2 letters from Mary one from Toronto censored one written on train to Chicago. One from Cox & Co. overdrawn 5 shillings. No allowances paid in yet. Wrote Mary. Letter from Aunt Joe & card from Bernice Robertson. 9:30pm Just going to shave read Girl of Lumberlost & get to bed after saying prayers.

Wednesday, January 24, 1917 - Rose 8:00 Breakfast 8:30 Parade 9:00 Machine Gun 9 - 10:30 & 3:30 - 4:30 Letter from Bert Watts Rc'd a lovely box from Mother/ A big box of chocolates, candy, horseshoe, towel & face cloth. They're always sending me something. How nice it is to be remembered. Goodnight 9:10 Retired

Saturday, January 27, 1917 - Rose 8:00 Breakfast 8:30 Parade 9:00 Letters from Tommy Seales & Carmelita. No Flying 45 M.P.H. wind. Ice frozen skating soon I hope.

Sunday, January 28, 1917 - Rose 7:30 Mass & Holy Communion Had beads sent from K of C blessed. Stayed around mess all day and wrote a letter to Mary, Bales & Harley.

Monday, January 29, 1917 - Rose 7:00 Breakfast 8:00 Parade 9:00 10:00 no flying yet. Took trip among clouds 7000 -8000 feet. It was a lovely ride 135 Mile per Hr. DH4 240 Rolls Royce. Started Lewis M.G. squad. No mail.

Tuesday, January 30, 1917 - Rose 8:00 Breakfast 8:30 Parade 9:00 No flying Colder 10:00pm snowing expect to go skating tomorrow. No mail. L.M.G. 11 - 12:30 5 - 5:45

Wednesday, January 31, 1917 - Rose 8:00 Breakfast 8:30 Parade 9:00 No M.G. No flying. Went to Regent's Park skating 2 - 5. Had a very enjoyable time. Letter from Mother. Retired 9:10 PM
