Transcript
FEMALE SPEAKER (Vimy Memorial Tour Guide): ... Very, very dangerous to be in any kind of trench, but you’re also contending with the elements. April 1917 was a super cold winter and the soldiers who were up here were by no means comfortable. They rarely get the chance to change their clothes, they rarely get the chance to have a dry pair of boots, they rarely get the chance to eat a hot meal, and you’re constantly dealing with all the water and mud that’s everywhere in these fields. It’s not a comfortable position to be in whatsoever. It’s very physically and mentally exhausting being up here because there’s the constant threat of enemy fire, or even a German soldier jumping into the trench during a raid. A MESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA
