I Lived the Dream

Heroes Remember

Transcript
What else can you say, I mean you do your thing. I lived the dream. Seventeen years old carrying a fully automatic machine gun. I mean....what young fellow out there doesn’t want to do that of course. I think serving the country is probably the greatest thing you can possibly do. If nothing else I’ve ever accomplished in my life, I’ve always got that on my resume. I think the Canadian Forces, there’s nothing wrong with a little discipline, there’s nothing wrong with the skills that you develop, your leadership skills, your ability to speak, your ability to, if nothing else it helps you stand up straight. I mean, to me there’s no greater honour than serving your country working for your country. And today’s kids, I mean we’ve got the internet now, we’ve got tv, you got a 100 channels on tv now. They know what’s going on. It’s not like they’re going into this blind as they used to be. Afghanistan now, you see it at least a couple a times a day on tv, or what have you. The newspapers are covering it. I think today’s kids, I think they should look at it and say, you know what, it’s not a bad thing. It’s a great honour to serve, the skill sets you learn, absolutely, you’ll never get them anywhere else.

David Ott

Mr. David Ott was born January 26, 1968 in Amherst, Nova Scotia. Fresh out of high school, Mr. Ott made his decision to join the military and entered battle school. In 1992, Mr. Ott was part of the contingent of soldiers to arrive in the besieged city of Sarajevo for the purpose providing humanitarian aid and medical supplies, as well as reopening of the airport and for this received an honour, Commander-in-Chief Unit commendation. Mr. Ott made the decision to leave the military shortly after this tour.
