Son of Rufus Romkey and Margaret Letitia Reinhardt of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Husband of Violet Marguerite Rieser of Petite Rivière, Lunenburg. Father of J. Murray Barclay, Charmaine Eleonora Peterson and Imogene Georgina Romkey.

He died of an unspecified cause at sea off the Turks and Caicos Islands, West Indies, where his body was submerged. His name is engraved on the family headstone in the Brookside Cemetery in West Dublin, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.
