75th Anniversary of the Dieppe Raid - Youth Delegate: Morgane Roy-Séger

Transcript
I wanted to be a youth delegate because I think it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. We’re going to be meeting some veterans who fought during that war, specifically during the Dieppe Raid. And I think it’s going to be such an amazing chance to honor them. I’ve learned so much more about my great grandfather who was in the, who was a member of the French Resistance. His network was located in Saint-Lô, Normandy. Which actually wasn’t too far from where the Dieppe Raid took place. And his son, which is my grandfather, absolutely had no idea that his own father was involved with the war. So, because any information about the war was top secret and dangerous. So only once the war was over that my grandfather learned about it. And right after the war my great grandfather received a medal of the French Resistance, so that was quite an honor for him. The anniversary of the Dieppe Raid is important to my family because we do feel a connection since my great grandfather was involved in that war. And we realize that without those soldiers we wouldn’t live the way we do today and have a free country like we do. I feel very lucky that I am part of the four Canadians that will be going in France and I just can’t wait to learn so much more about the war.
