His real surname is Bonin.

Son of George Bonin (aka Bona) and Ruffine Marie Briand, of Halifax, Nova Scotia.

On February 22, 1941, the Kantara came under fire from the guns of the battleship Gneisenau and was sunk in the North Atlantic, position 47°38'N/40°07'W, when passing London and the Tyne to set sail for the West Indies. The survivors were made prisoners of war and taken to the Marlag und Milag Nord camp in Bremen, Germany. Bona was repatriated due to his ill health and died of tuberculosis in the military hospital in Chester, Cheshire, England, on October 21, 1944.
