His full name is Lloyd William Ernest Hampton.

Son of William Henry Hampton and Catherine Edith Hawkins of Montreal, Quebec. During the First World War, William Henry enlisted on 10 May 1916 with the 199th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, regimental number 919362. He fought in France with the 12th Construction Company of the Canadian Forestry Corps of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. During the Second World War, he enlisted again on 14 July 1941 in Montreal. He served in England and was demobilized on 5 September 1945.

On 12 April 1945, the SS Silver Star Park collided with the American freighter Mamgore and caught fire off the coast of New York, USA, in the North Atlantic. At least 15 sailors, including the captain, were killed in the accident.
