Air Training and Liberators

Transcript
And then we got into, what we called after service flying training. We got our wings, we took GR school which was preparing us for the coastal side of things. And then went into OTU, but the important thing is, I was about a year and half of training before I ever got anywhere near operations. I started in Tigermoss, and a Cessna Crane, which was a twin engine sort of a beach craft type air plane for service training, and then from my nav training I navigated Ansons. I took B25 training, which is a twin engine nose-wheel type aircraft. I did that to get used to the tricycle undercarriage before going on to the Liberator, but I did all my operations on B24 Liberators. Big air plane, 110 foot wingspan which is as big as some of your jets today. I actually took 2 OTUs. I took the first one in Nassau in the Bahamas, and there I picked up 7 Canadians. Then when I went to Europe, I went up into Montreal to ferry command and picked up a Lib and took it over, and I was transferred down to an OTU preparing me to go to 224 squadron, which was the RAF squadron I was in. I became a very good, pardon me, but I became a very good Liberator pilot. Now mind you, if you're gonna fly an air plane in operations, you'd better like it. But I did 61 sorties without coming off Ops, just over, just a little over 2 years on the Lib.

Ken Moore

Born in Rock Haven, Saskatchewan, Ken Moore was the youngest of eight children. His father died when he was very young and his mother raised the family on her own. After graduating from highschool, he hitchhiked to Vancouver, BC and joined the Air Force. During the war, he piloted 61 missions, in Liberators, on coastal escort duties and submarine patrols. During one such mission, his crew sank two U-boats in 22 minutes. Because of this act he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and the Silver Star (by the US).
