Enlisting with the Royal Hussars (Part 1 of 2)

Transcript
Yes I grew up skiing. Skiing was my interest, sporting interest, in the full sense of the word. Closely involved with a Norwegian family in Quebec. He thoroughly enjoyed skiing. I was ambitious to, in regards to the aircraft industry, and the business of piloting aircraft and navigation. Well I didn’t decide in a hurry you might say, it was a gradual business. I could see things developing and I wanted to play a responsible part in that development. The air force, and because I was otherwise expected to go to England to study aeronautical engineering. With the business of, with the war developing, put a damper on that. I enlisted, I was down at the air force recruiting centre on my 18th birthday. Yes I wanted to be a pilot, but I didn’t make it a flat “or else”, in other words, if I could be useful in another direction, I’d be happy to play my part in that way.
Description

Mr. Heward remembers some of his early life in Québec, and his childhood dream of being involved in the aircraft industry. The outbreak of war led to a change in those plans.

Richard Heward

Mr. Heward was born on March 18, 1922 in Montréal, Québec. As a child he dreamed of becoming a pilot or navigator. Upon graduation from high school, he had hoped to go to England to study aeronautical engineering, but the outbreak of war changed those plans. Mr. Heward tried to join the air force, but his impatience with the long delays led him to join the army. After the D-Day invasion, he was transferred to the Norwegian Army to survey the heavy water plant in Norway that had been used by the Germans to assist in their nuclear research.
