Manning Depot

Heroes Remember

Transcript
Our basic training was at Manning Depot at Rockcliffe. We lived in barracks, just the women. We were broken down into squadrons and flights, just like the men and we did everything together, just women. We did have some flight instructors, some... phys ed instructors that were men but mostly it was just women. I was always in what they called the No. 1 Flight which was the first squadron, No 1 Flight, and I don’t know why but I always seemed to be in the front row and then... and then I went to Toronto for trade training and from there I was posted back to... at Y Depot in Halifax and from there I went to Scoudouc, NB and from there I went to Eastern Air Command in Halifax and from there to Air Force Headquarters and that’s when I became more involved in the Precision Drill Squad. We again had formed squadrons and flights and whatever and again I was in the No. 1 Flight.
Description

Doris Shoultz

Mrs. Doris Shoultz was born in Chester, Nova Scotia, June 11, 1925. She grew up in a small town, graduated high school at age 17 and while waiting to be old enough to go into nursing training, she became impatient and decided to enlist in the military. With a sense of adventure for travelling, Mrs. Shoultz and her best friend joined up. She enlisted in Halifax, Nova Scotia, going to Rockcliffe for three months where she would become a part of the No. 1 Flight Squadron and later take part in what was termed the Precision Drill Squadron. Doris met her husband while in the service. After three years of service in Canada, Doris was discharged. Mrs. Shoultz married and went back to school. She and her husband raised a family with one of her son’s attending Royal Military College. To this day, Doris describes her military life as the best days of her life!!
