Mon dossier ACCLt H.R. Gray, VC, DSC, RVMRC 1917-1945
À la glorieuse mémoire du lieutenant Robert Hampton Gray, VC, DSC, de la Réserve des Volontaires de la Marine royale canadienne, le dernier Canadien mort au combat pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Le lieutenant Gray, de Nelson (C.-B.), a été tué pendant un raid aérien contre la Marine impériale japonaise dans la baie d’Onagawa, le 9 août 1945. La formation de Corsair qu’il menait courageusement avait décollé un peu plus tôt d’un porte-avions allié.

THE HALL WAS THE CENTRE OF MILITARY LIFE
IN THE NELSON AREA AND WAS HOME TO MANY UNITS
OF THE CANADIAN ARMY INCLUDING:
SOUTH KOOTENAY RIFLES ROCKY MOUNTAIN RANGERS
54TH KOOTENAY BATTALION CDN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE
24TH HEAVY ANTI-AIRCRAFT REGT ROYAL CDN. ARTILLERY
44TH FIELD ENGINEER SQD. ROYAL CDN. ENGINEERS
THE DRILL HALL WAS ACQUIRED BY THE PROVINCE
IN 1964 AND SERVED MANY CIVILIAN FUNCTIONS
UNTIL ITS DEMOLITION IN 1994

Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve
The last Canadian to be kill in action during
the Second World War. Lieutenant Gray,
from Nelson, British Columbia, died when
his corsair aircraft was shot down as he
fearlessly led a carrier air strike against
the ships of the Imperial Japanese Navy
at Onagawa Bay on August 9th, 1945.
