Seaforth Highlanders of Canada

North Ridge named this neighbourhood development Highlander Ridge
to honour the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada. The Seaforth Highlanders
regiment was formed in 1910 and served overseas in both World War I and
World War II. Of particular significance was their involvement in liberating
the Netherlands during World War II. Members of the Seaforth Highlanders
have been deployed on many missions since World War II including Korea,
Egypt, Cyprus and most recently, Afghanistan. North Ridge is pleased to be
able to honour the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada to thank them for their
service to Canada.

En 2015, la North Ridge Development Corp. a organisé un concours visant à trouver un nom à son nouveau projet de construction de maisons de ville dans l’îlot 3200 de la 11e rue ouest. Dalton Males, d’Ortona Street, a remporté le concours avec sa suggestion de Highlander Ridge. Le nom rend hommage au Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, un régiment d’infanterie basé à Vancouver qui a combattu en Sicile, en Italie, et lors de la libération des Pays-Bas au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

UNICORN’s CO at the time, Commander Tom Gordon, arranged for the anchor to be shipped from the dockyard in Esquimalt, the concrete pad was poured in 1989 and the anchor placed. The monument was consecrated by the unit Padre, Lieutenant Commander Russell in May 1990.

The plaque dedicating the monument to “the Prairie Sailor” was added for the Battle of the Atlantic in May 1990. In May 2009, the two side plaques were added in memorial to the Battle of the Atlantic.

Ce monument commémoratif a été érigé dans les Jardins commémoratifs des anciens combattants métis. Il a été dévoilé dans le cadre du festival Retour à Batoche de 2014. Les Jardins commémoratifs des anciens combattants métis ont été dévoilés en 2013.

En 2013, 25 arbres de 7,60 m (5 pieds) ont été plantés selon une formation en « U » et, au centre, un jardin de fleurs a été disposé. Le monument commémoratif comprend huit dalles de granit bleu posées sur un socle de béton. Autour de cet arrangement, on peut voir des panneaux sur lesquels sont inscrits les noms des 3 600 anciens combattants métis qui sont tombés au combat durant la Première et la Seconde Guerres mondiales et la guerre de Corée.

Le financement de ce monument commémoratif est géré par l’Institut Gabriel Dumont (les études autochtones et la recherche appliquée), qui a pour tâche de faire la promotion de la culture métisse par le biais de la recherche et de l’éducation. Par l’entremise du Programme d’aide à l’édification des monuments commémoratifs dans les collectivités, le gouvernement fédéral a versé jusqu’à 50 000 $ pour couvrir une partie du coût total de 300 000 $. Le financement a été consenti par l’Institut Gabriel Dumont, Anciens Combattants Canada, le Fonds de développement Clarence Campeau et le Fonds des initiatives communautaires de la Saskatchewan; des particuliers, des entreprises et des organisations de service ont également fait des dons.

Ce mémorial est dédié aux hommes et aux femmes qui se sont entraînés et qui ont travaillé à la base de Dafoe. Il a été érigé par l’escadre no 600 (Regina) de l’Association de l’Aviation royale du Canada. Le tumulus est visible de la route 6, et le service de la voirie a installé des panneaux historiques pointant vers le site. Une structure de ciment, une structure de tir en ciment et un hangar d’origine (maintenant propriété privée) sont visibles également.

La filiale de la Légion royale canadienne de Wadena (Saskatchewan) a inauguré une murale de 8 pi x 24 pi intitulée « Salute to Memories » peinte sur le mur de sa salle, du côté de la rue Main. Ce projet de deux ans, mené par des bénévoles et dédié aux hommes et aux femmes qui se sont battus pour préserver la liberté du Canada, est l’oeuvre d’artistes du groupe Wadena Mural Images : Rose Palechka, Lenora Hordos, Wendy Gauthier et Betty MacPherson.
