On September 1, 1939 the District Officer Commanding Military District #10 issued instructions to the Commanding Officer, the Fort Garry
Horse, that mobilization procedures were to be initiated immediately. Officers of the Regiment were notified that recruiting would commence at
Minto Armouries, Winnipeg, at 1300 hours on September 20, 1939. The Fort Garry Horse has the honour of being the first complete Canadian
Cavalry Regiment in Canada to be called to active service for the Second World War.

The Fort Garry Horse trained at Minto Armouries and Camp Shilo, Manitoba, before proceeding to Camp Borden, Ontario on September 1, 1940.
The Regiment embarked for the United Kingdom on November 10, 1941, and after a period of intense training, took part in the assault on the
beaches of Normandy, France on D.Day, June 6, 1944. The Garry’s on various occasions saw action with the 2nd and 3rd Canadian Infantry Divisions,
the British 50th Northumberland Div. And the Royal Marine Commandos and the 101st US Airborne Div. The Fort Garry Horse served with
distinction through France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, on May 5, 1945 after exactly eleven
months of combat.

Following the cessation of hostilities in Europe on May 8, 1945, the Regiment was stationed at Doetinchem, Holland, until repatriated to Canada
on Nov. 30 1945. The Fort Garry Horse returned to Winnipeg and the Active Force Regiment was disbanded at Minto Armouries
effective January 31, 1946.

Erected by the Fort Garry Horse Association on the occasion of the 75th Anniversary of the Regiment (1912-
1987). Dedicated in honor of those who served and in memory of all Garrys who made the supreme sacrifice.

2^nd Lieutenant Alan Arnett McLeod, VC, citation from The London Gazette, dated May 1, 1918.

"While flying with his observer, Lieutenant A. W. Hammond, M.C., attacking hostile formations by bombs and machine gun fire, he was assailed at a height of 5,000 feet by eight enemy triplanes which dived at him from all directions, firing from their front guns. By skilful manoeuvring he enabled his observer to fire bursts at each machine in turn, shooting three of them down out of control. By this time Lieutenant McLeod had received five wounds, and while continuing the engagement a bullet penetrated his petrol tank and set the machine on fire.

He then climbed out on to the left bottom plane, controlling his machine from the side of the fusilage, and by sideslipping steeply kept the flames to one side, thus enabling the observer to continue firing until the ground was reached.

The observer had been wounded six times when the machine crashed in "No Man's Land" and 2^nd Lieutenant McLeod, notwithstanding his own wounds, dragged him away from the burning wreckage at great personal risk from heavy machine-gun fire from the enemy's lines. This very gallant pilot was again wounded by a bomb whilst engaged in this act of rescue, but he persevered until he had placed Lieutenant Hammond in comparative safety, before falling himself from exhaustion and loss of blood."

In memory of William Hall 1916 - 1986 renowned military historian former Staff Sgt. Royal Wpg Rifles life member of the Royal Canadian Legion No. 42. This stone was erected by his wife Iris and family.
