Atlas Institute for Veterans and Families

This centre of excellence on mental health for Veterans and their families was established to provide easier access to information, research, tools and expertise on post-traumatic stress disorder and related mental health conditions.

The focus of the Atlas Institute for Veterans and FamiliesFootnote 1 is to create knowledge networks with researchers across the country to increase expertise on military and Veteran mental health, suicide prevention and substance use disorder.

A focus on sharing knowledge

The Institute works with Veterans, families, service providers and researchers to bridge the divide between research and practice so Veterans and their families can get the best possible mental health care and supports. Mental health conditions are a common illness or injury for Canada's military members. Of all Veterans who receive a disability benefit from Veterans Affairs Canada, 29 per cent receive it for a mental health condition. Of this group, 71 per cent receive their disability benefit for PTSDFootnote 2.

Atlas brings CAF and RCMP Veterans, families, service providers and research partners together to create, gather and share knowledge on Veteran and Family mental health. They help to integrate this information into practice to improve treatment and support.

First responders, their families and other Canadians affected by PTSD or a related mental health condition also benefit from the information and knowledge developed at the institute.
