Canadian Armed Forces Health Survey (CAFHS 2019) data analysis

Funding opportunity

Canadian Armed Forces Health Survey (CAFHS 2019) data analysis to examine health trends and factors affecting Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) women and gender-diverse members.

Overview

Researchers are invited to apply for a new grant funding opportunity sponsored by Canadian Forces Health Services Director of Women and Diversity Health (D WDH) to conduct a focused, comprehensive and/or multivariable analysis using the Canadian Armed Forces Health Survey (CAFHS 2019) data to examine health trends and factors affecting Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) women and gender-diverse members. There is potential for up to three research proposals to be funded.

Anticipated timeline and budget

  • Application Deadline:
  • 6 May 2024 at 11:59 PM (PST)
  • Estimated Project End Date:
  • No later than 31 March 2025
  • Grant funding available:
  • Up to three grants may be awarded, at a value of up to $70,000 each.
  • Statistics Canada (StatsCan) fee:
  • Fees associated with accessing CAFHS 2019 from StatsCan should be incorporated into the budget proposal.

Background

The Canadian Forces Health Services (CFHS) Director of Women and Diversity Health (D WDH) is focused on enhancing the health care and wellness supports for women and diverse members. However, further research is required to understand the health needs of these subpopulations within the CAF to ensure resources are directed towards programs which will have the most impact.

D WDH invites researchers from relevant fields to submit proposals to analyze the CAFHS 2019 to identify health trends and correlations affecting CAF women and diverse members. To date, there have been several broad analyses conducted on the CAFHS 2019 survey; however, more in-depth analysis of the data is required. For example, a comprehensive multivariable analysis of the data looking at correlations between multiple health data variables and identity factors could reveal health trends amongst various demographics of the CAF.

The CAFHS 2019 was designed to provide insight into the health status of the CAF members. The data is held by StatsCan and will require researchers to apply directly to StatsCan for access. Further information about the CAFHS 2019 can be found at the StatsCan website, Surveys and statistical programs - Canadian Armed Forces Health Survey (CAFHS) (statcan.gc.ca).

Research objectives

This funding opportunity is seeking submissions from researchers to conduct a focused, comprehensive and/or multivariable analysis of the CAFHS 2019 that will identify larger trends and correlations for women and diverse members. Potential topics for which D WDH has a specific interest include, but are not limited to:

  • adherence to recommended health screening (PAP/mammograms/colorectal/etc.);
  • health services access (satisfaction/wait times/quality of care);
  • chronic health issues;
  • mental health; and,
  • associations between injuries and military physical training or exercise (rates/causes/severity/location/types of exercise/FORCE test injury rates/causes/fitness levels/exercise habits) for its women and diverse members.

Final report should:

  • Identify trends in health for CAF women and/or diverse members or, when appropriate to the research thesis, make comparisons to CAF population or Canadian age and sex matched populations
  • Identify any factors or potential correlation between variables
  • Outline Gender-based analysis and SAGER guidelines followed
  • Comment on any additional considerations for developing a relevant policy approach or strategy relating to healthcare for women and diverse members

Desired outputs

  • Final research report that outlines trends and correlation between various health aspects and identify factors, including key factors and considerations as outlined above.
  • Introduction, Methods, Data analysis, Results and Discussion.
  • Virtual presentation of findings to project sponsor (may take place after the project end date).

Applicant qualifications and requirements

  • Proposals must be led by a senior investigator with a PhD in a relevant field.
  • All appropriate academic research guidelines must be followed. A research ethics board approval from Defence Research Development Canada (DRDC) or an accredited academic institution in Canada will be required prior to funding being issued.
  • Approval from the Surgeon General Health Research Board is required. A CFHS point of contact will be provided to facilitate this process once the research proposals are selected.
