During World War II, 25 civil and military internment camps were active in Canada. Camp S/43 was one of them, located in the military structures of the Fort on St. Helen’s Island, which now houses the Stewart Museum. Between 1940 and 1943, 400 Italian merchant seamen and civilians were detained there.
