February 15, 1888

Sgt Smith was born Francis Schmidt on June 15/1888 in Brooklyn, New York; the son of Edward Schmidt and Elizabeth Burgess. He had three siblings: William,Charlotte and Florence. Frank married Elizabeth Jackson (a British Home Child) on July 31/1907 in St.Patrick's Church in Montreal. He knew his first four children, all daughters. They were named Kathleen, Frances, Lily and Geraldine. Sadly, Geraldine died at six months of age. Sgt Smith enlisted on 2 June 1915 and embarked for overseas on 20 February 1916; just five weeks before the birth of his fifth daughter. A note to his wife said,"if it's a boy, it will fill my heart with joy. If it's a girl, call her Pearl." His last child was was named Pearl Edith Smith.

Lievin is a small town in the Department of the Pas-de-Calais, 3.5 kilometres west of Lens. The Communal Cemetery is on the south-west side of the town on the road to Givenchy-en-Gohelle.
