Baptized Édouard-Samuel-Maurice Bauset. Son of Édouard Bauset (deceased in 1892) and Éléonore Ostell (deceased in 1891), of Montréal. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by his grands-parents in Ottawa: Samuel-Pierre Bauset (deceased in 1909) and Virginie Walker (deceased in 1907). When he enlisted, he declared his uncle and godfather, René-Adolphe Bauset, as next-of-kin.

Contalmaison is a village in the Department of the Somme, 6 kilometres east-north-east of Albert. The Sunken Road, from which the cemetery is named, is part of the Contalmaison-Pozieres road, and the cemetery lies a little east of the road.
