His full name is Joseph Gérard Lucien Gourd. Son of Joseph Gourd and Marie Eugénie Pelland of St-Jean-de-Matha, Lanaudière, Québec.

He died as a result of a fractured skull sustained on board his ship in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, England, caused by a fall or a clash.
