The Zonnebeke Church Dugout is an amazing example of a preserved

first world war dugout.Over 100 years ago this structure was

built by a group of Allied tunnellers while the battle of

Passchendaele raged above them.It is five meters underground

and consists of a 29 metre long main gallery, five rooms, side

corridors and two stairways.After the war, the dugout was

closed and forgotten for 71 years until it was accidentally

discovered in 1989 by an archeological dig.In July, 2017, the

dugout was drained and temporarily opened to the public.On

November 10, 2017, a group of young Canadians will place a time

capsule in the dugout as part of the official closure of the

dugout.
