Interviewer: Why did you have such an ambition to go overseas? The war was on. My father had wanted to train, he had sailed all through the First World War and he wanted to help train the people in the work he knew in the navy and the war, of course, I had heard all about the war all my life and following it. The news we never missed. And my father’s great ambition was to help in that and, of course, he was gone and so my ambition, whatever I could do, I wanted to do it.
