Description
Mrs. Hubbard describes how the two surgeons, Dr. Ross Tilley and Dr. Archibald McIndoe used their skills to reconstruct a nose for the burn patients of East Grinstead.
Transcription
Archibald McIndoe was the one who really got the English part going and Ross Tilley was our Canadian surgeon and his work was fantastic. I watched him do a nose one time and, my God, he took the hammer and he took a knife and oh he was clever with his hands, he could do wood too! And he carved the bone, you see, it came out of the hip and he carved it up so that it was just the right shape and he shoved it up here and he took the hammer and he hammered it in and, “Oh no, not quite right,” and he took the knife in there,”Ahhh!” Fantastic! And that nose when he was done, I mean it was a long time before you’d see it because it was pretty puffy and that, but when it was done, and the black eyes disappeared too, his nose was beautiful, better than it was before.
