The colours were removed from the protestant Chapel at CFB Clinton and laid up in the Wesley-Willis United Church now Clinton United Church  in the town of Clinton.  The base was due to close on 31 August.  After the ceremony, Major Frank Golding, Clinton’s final commanding officer, said: “To those present today and to all who will worship in this church in the future, may these symbols serve as a valuable reminder of the friendship that has existed between the townsfolk of Clinton and the military for the past 30 years."

Wesley-Willis United Church was formed in 1925 with the joining of the congregations of Wesley Methodist and Willis Presbyterian. As of June 2006, Wesley-Willis (after becoming a single point charge without Holmesville) and Ontario Street United Churches became one with a new identity as Clinton United Church.

THE
SHERMAN TANK

This Sherman Tank stands as a tribute
to the valour of the Tanks Crews of all
allied armies who used Shermans in every theatre of
World War II. It commemorates also, all those men
and women who worked in the Arsenal of Democracy
producing some 40,000 of these American weapons.

Crew Members: 5, 1-76mm Cannon, 3 Machine Guns,
Range: 120 Miles, Weight: 35 Tons, Top Speed: 24 MPH.

Oct. 1942 - The Sherman Tank received its baptism of
fire with the British Eighth Army in the Battle of El
Alamein, Egypt. June 6, 1944 - The British up-gunned
six hundred Shermans with their famous seventeen
pounder anti-tank gun for the D-Day invasion of Nor-
mandy. This, the Firefly Sherman was the most suc-
cessful tank used by the British and Canadian armies.

SHERMANS IN THE CANADIAN ARMY
Fourteen Canadian Armoured Regiments of Sherman
Tanks fought in Sicily, Italy, Northwest Europe and
Korea. One of the most famous exploits of the Sher-
man Tank was that of Major David Currie, command-
ing "C" Squadron, the South Alberta Regiment, who
won the Victoria Cross August 20, 1944, in the battle
of the Falaise Gap, France. The Insignia on Sherman
78-901 commemorates Major Currie's command tank.

Ce mémorial a été construit en 1922 à la mémoire des morts de la Première Guerre mondiale; il est également dédié aux morts de la Seconde Guerre mondiale depuis 1948. Il semble, d’après les renseignements recueillis, que le conseil municipal ait assumé la responsabilité financière de la construction du cénotaphe et de son entretien. Exceptionnellement, le cénotaphe ne porte pas seulement le nom des disparus, mais également de tous les combattants. Le mémorial se compose d’un piétement et d’une colonne de marbre rouge moucheté, surmontés d’une réplique de la tête et des épaules d’un soldat de la Première Guerre mondiale coiffé d’une casquette. Deux sabres de cavalerie croisés sont gravés sur l’avant du piétement.
