Oriole Park Public School
The four separate A.J. Casson memorials are all in one frame. (WWII) Illuminated list designed by A.J. Casson. “For King and Country / Members of / Oriole Park School / who have volunteered for active service / with / Canada’s fighting forces.” Two columns. Given names followed by surnames. No key, but a decorative black ink cross appears to indicate death.
Oriole Park Public School is located at Eglinton Avenue and Avenue Road, nestled in a well-established community of mostly single unit homes. The school opened in 1928 under the name of College View Avenue School with portables on the present site and an enrolment of 28 students. The current school building was first occupied in 1930 and renamed Oriole Park Public School. A wing was added in 1939 and a gymnasium in 1974. The current enrollment is 275 students. The school has both a primary and junior play area, a basketball court, soccer field and two baseball diamonds. The learning commons includes a computer lab. Oriole Park has a highly regarded academic program and offers a broad range of extracurricular activities.
Bourse d’admission de colonel F.A. Tilston
Le regretté colonel F.A. Tilston a créé des bourses d’admission pour les étudiants de première année en pharmacie qui ont l’indice d’admission le plus élevé, mais qui n’ont pas obtenu de bourse d’admission de plus grande valeur.
Le colonel Tilston a obtenu son diplôme en pharmacie en 1929 et était président-directeur général de Sterling Drug Limited au moment de son départ à la retraite. Il a été le premier diplômé de l’Université de Toronto (et le 9e Canadien) à recevoir la Croix de Victoria, la plus haute distinction honorifique du Commonwealth en temps de guerre, pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
