ON MOBILIZATION, 18TH JUNE 1940, THE 1ST BATTALION OF THE STORMONT DUNDAS AND GLENGARRY HIGHLANDERS WAS RAISED, DRAWING FROM MILITIA UNITS IN PETERBOROUGH, KINGSTON, BROCKVILLE AND CORNWALL. THE 1ST BATTALION ASSOCIATION OF THE REGIMENT HELPED TO CARRY FORWARD THE PROUD TRADITIONS AND SPIRIT OF SERVICE SINCE THE DAYS OF THE GLENGARRY FENCIBLES. ON THIS DAY OF THE 50TH ANNUAL REUNION, 7TH JUNE 1997, WE PASS ON THESE TRADITIONS AND HERITAGE TO OUR YOUNG SOLDIERS.

Plaque dédiée aux membres du régiment Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders qui ont péri pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

Le régiment Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders forme deux bataillons pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Mobilisé en mai 1940, le 1er Bataillon prend part au débarquement de Normandie et à diverses opérations dans le Nord-Ouest de l’Europe avant d’être démantelé, en janvier 1946. Pour sa part, le 3e Bataillon du Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders est mobilisé le 1er juin 1945 pour servir avec la Force d’occupation de l’Armée canadienne en Allemagne. Il est démantelé le 24 mai 1946.  

Ce mémorial est dédié à tous les membres de ce régiment, du 1er et du 3e Bataillons, qui ont péri pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il s’agit d’un monument distinct de la Plaque de la Seconde Guerre mondiale du 1er bataillon de Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders.

Cette plaque est dédiée aux membres du 1er bataillon de Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders, qui sont morts ou qui ont servi pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

Les soldats du bataillon Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders furent mobilisés pour le service actif le 24 mai 1940. De plus, il fut renommé le 1er bataillon le 7 novembre 1940 et était alors composé des compagnies de Prince of Wales Rangers (Peterborough), du Princess of Wales’ Own Regiment (Kingston), des Brockville Rifles (Brockville) et de deux compagnies de Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders (Cornwall).

L’unité quitta pour la Grande-Bretagne le 19 juillet 1941 et débarqua en Normandie (France) le jour J, soit le 6 juin 1944, aux côtés de la 9e Brigade d’infanterie, la 3e Division d’infanterie, et poursuivit les combats dans le nord-ouest de l’Europe jusqu’à la fin de la guerre. Le bataillon d’outre-mer fut dissous le 15 janvier 1946.

Cette plaque de bronze commémore la pose de la pierre angulaire et de la construction du manège militaire de Cornwall. 

Le manège militaire de Cornwall, construit de 1938 à 1939, est associé aux exigences croissantes de la milice du Canada entre la Première Guerre mondiale et la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il constituait le cœur d’un camp d’entraînement de base adjacent de 35 acres où, d’après les estimations, 15 000 soldats se seraient entraînés pendant plus de quatre ans (voir photo 3).

Aujourd’hui, différentes unités, notamment le Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders, le SD&G Cadet Corps, le corps de cadets de la Marine royale canadienne de Stormont et l’Escadron de cadets de Cornwall sont domiciliés au manège militaire de Cornwall, sans compter les nombreuses activités communautaires qui s’y déroulent.

Ce parchemin a été dévoilé à la mémoire des soldats du 154e bataillon de la Force expéditionnaire canadienne qui sont décédés pendant la Première Guerre mondiale.

Formé dans les comtés de Stormant, de Dundas et de Glengarry, près de Cornwall (Ontario), le 154e bataillon quitta pour l’Angleterre le 16 octobre 1916 et arriva au Royaume-Uni plus tard ce mois-là. Le bataillon fut dissous quelques mois plus tard, après le transfert de ses membres vers d’autres bataillons comme renforts. En dépit de sa dissolution, les survivants du 154e bataillon original créèrent ce parchemin pour rendre hommage aux membres qui sont décédés pendant la Première Guerre mondiale.

Cette plaque de bronze a été dévoilée à la mémoire du capitaine Clarence Dickinson Hamilton, Corps médical de l’armée canadienne. 

Clarence Dickinson Hamilton est né à Cornwall (Ontario), le 18 décembre 1883. Il fit ses études à l’école publique et à l’école secondaire de Cornwall. Il semble qu’il ait poursuivi ses études à l’Université de Toronto, puis à l’Université McGill, d’où il obtint son diplôme en 1911. Il pratiqua par la suite la médecine à Cornwall, avant de s’enrôler dans l’armée lors du déclenchement de la Première Guerre mondiale.

Il quitta pour l’Angleterre à l’été de 1915 à titre de membre de la 141e ambulance de campagne, RAMC. Pendant son séjour à l’étranger, il servit également comme médecin militaire pour le 2e bataillon du Royal Sussex Regiment et le 1er bataillon de The Black Watch. Hamilton fut ensuite transféré au Corps médical de l’armée canadienne, avant de rentrer au Canada. En septembre 1918, il s’embarqua encore une fois pour servir outre-mer, franchissant l’océan à bord du navire affecté au transport des troupes HUNTSEND. Pendant le voyage, il succomba à une grippe, raison pour laquelle son corps dut être jeté en mer le 9 octobre 1918. E

n l’absence d’une tombe connue, on rend hommage au capitaine Clarence Dickinson Hamilton sur le monument commémoratif de Halifax.

Cette plaque de bronze a été dévoilée à la mémoire du sous-lieutenant d’aviation Peter Donald Ross-Ross, ARC.

Peter Donald Ross-Ross est né le 11 août 1924 à Cornwall (Ontario), où il a grandi. Il suivit sa formation en aviation et en navigation au Canada, dans le cadre du Programme d’entraînement aérien du Commonwealth britannique (PEACB), avant de partir pour l’étranger. Une fois en Angleterre, il fut affecté au 227e 

escadron du Royal Air Force, pilotant des bombardiers Lancaster de la Foyal Air Force à Balderton, au sud?est de Newark-on-Trent, à Nottinghamshire. Dans la nuit du 3 au 4 mars 1945, le sous-lieutenant d’aviation Ross-Ross prit part à une mission de bombardement dans le canal Dortmund-Ems, dans la région de Ladbergen, en Allemagne. Son aéronef fut touché, puis s’écrasa, le tuant ainsi à peine deux mois avant la fin des hostilités en Europe. D’abord enterré à Munster, le sous-lieutenant d’aviation Peter Donald Ross-Ross fut enterré de nouveau dans le cimetière de guerre de la forêt de Reichswald près de Kleve, en Allemagne.

Ce parchemin a été dévoilé à la mémoire des membres décédés de la Chapelle du Bon Pasteur ainsi que de ceux et celles qui ont servi pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

Remarque historique : la Chapelle du Bon Pasteur, située à Cornwall (Ontario), fut érigée en 1886 à titre de Mountain Memorial. Une nouvelle église de briques Mountain Memorial fut construite en 1893 sur un terrain au nord du terrain d’origine, à l’intersection de la rue Malborough et de la First street, et elle fut renommée Chapelle du Bon Pasteur. L’église ferma ses portes 118 ans après son inauguration, et ses artéfacts se trouvent maintenant dans la Trinity Anglican Church.
