Period: Fiscal year 2018-2019

Overview:

Tower Equestrian Association Inc. offers equine-based therapy to Veterans and those working in similar fields (police, first responders etc.). Individual programs are available in eight-week and 12-week formats with the objective of allowing trust to develop between clients and their horse. The feedback provided by horses, which are herd animals that bond with their handler, allows the client to begin to release tensions, emotions and feelings that may have been buried.

Project goals:

The project’s goals were as follows:

  • To allow trust to develop between clients and their equine companion.
  • To have clients reach a more self-actualized understanding of their situation as a fundamental step on the road to emotional stability and recovery.
  • To develop individual goals dependent upon the 'starting point' of each client upon program entry.

Project activities:

The project’s goals were achieved through the development and delivery of equine-based therapeutic programs facilitated by certified equestrian staff.

Project results:

The organization developed and delivered a diverse set of programs with an overall focus on mental health and well-being. One such program, Trail of the Heart, was designed for adults, including Veterans and members of their families, who desire positive change in their lives.
