Overview:

The Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) Branch 110’s project, The Veteran Resource Guide, involved the creation and distribution of a community resource guide to assist Veterans after their release from the military.

Project goals:

The goals of this project included the following items:

  • Develop a community resource guide to help Veterans access health care; services and develop social connections;
  • Distribute the guide strategically throughout Trenton, Ontario; and
  • Improve the lives of Veterans and their families by making the transition to life after service safer, smoother, and more comfortable.

Project activities:

To achieve these goals, the RCL Branch 110:

  • Hired two students to assist with the project;
  • Conducted two focus groups made up of Veterans, their spouses or caregivers, Legion Executives, and volunteers to help determine the information and resources needs of newly released Veterans;
  • Gathered information based on needs identified in the focus groups;
  • Developed the resource guide and designed the layout; and
  • Distributed the guides to Veterans through local organizations.

Project results:

The RCL Branch 110 successfully completed the resource guide and distributed it to key community locations where Veterans can access copies as needed. The guide includes information on finding a family doctor, establishing counselling and mental health supports, and creating social connections.
