For many years members of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 76 attended the Parksville Armistice Day ceremonies. The names of Qualicum Beach men who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the Parksville Cenotaph.
In the spring of 1935, J.R. Lowery donated a centerpiece and flagpole which was erected in the Qualicum Beach Cemetery. The land was originally jointly owned by the Legion with other local organizations, and had been deeded to the village with the stipulation that the center plot be retained by the Legion. Mr. McGowan finished the centerpiece and a tablet was added. Each year following the Parksville ceremonies, a wreath was placed at the foot of the flagstaff, in remembrance of several Veterans interred in the cemetery.
During 1946 and 1947, a Memorial Committee headed by E.D. Thwaites, raised funds to erect a cenotaph.
