Context

Worn on the Canadian Forces' Decoration (CD) undress ribbon to denote the award of each clasp to the decoration.

Description

The rosettes are small metallic devices, silver in colour, approximately 9 mm in diameter, depicting a heraldic rose.

Numerals

Context

Numerals denote additional tours of duty on a particular mission for UN and some NATO medals.

Eligibility and Criteria

NATO tour numerals are awarded for another 180 days accumulated service with a NATO mission or after each additional 540 days service in the adjacent area. This only applies for the NATO medals for the Former-Yugoslavia, Kosovo and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Other NATO medals do not have numerals.

Maple Leaves

Context

A Maple Leaf is worn on the undress ribbons to denote the level of membership in the Order of Canada, the second award of a decorations, the award or a theatre bar or to denote a second or subsequent bar to a general service award.

Mention in Dispatches

Context

Members of the Canadian Forces on active service and other individuals working with or in conjunction with the Canadian Forces on or after November 1, 1990 are eligible for the award of the Insignia.

Eligibility and Criteria

Mention in Dispatches shall be awarded for valiant conduct, devotion to duty or other distinguished service.

Description

The Insignia shall consist of a bronze oak leaf, 30mm long and 9 mm wide at its widest point.

Korea Service Badge

Eligibility and Criteria

Korean War veterans who served with the Canadian Forces or associated support groups between 27 June 1950, and 27 July 1954 are eligible for the badge. The immediate family of a deceased veteran may apply for the badge.

Description

The badge is gold and enamel designed for wear on civilian clothing. It is a circle, 3/4 inches in diameter; the centre a red maple leaf on a cream coloured shield; the outer circle green with the words "KOREA-COREE 1950-1953"; the reverse plain with a stamped serial number and clutch pin fastener.

Applicant for Enlistment English and French Badge

Context

Not everyone attempting to enlist in the Canadian Forces met the existing minimum medical (physical) standards. Initially, no distinguishing button was issued to those persons rejected for failing to meet the standards. Although a Committee on War Service Badges had recommended on 27 October 1939 that two badges be established; a SERVICE badge for those voluntarily attested for active service beyond Canada and a RESERVE badge for those medically exempt (among other reasons); that recommendation was not acted upon.

Fire Fighters Canada and Overseas Badge

Description

The original Order in Council did not require the maintenance of a register and it does not appear that one was created. Given the limited size of the Corps and the badges being stamped with the member's serial number this would not have been necessary in any case.

It appears that the only record of issue likely to be found is that in the Record of Service and Nominal Roll issued as a presentation booklet to each member of the Corps.

No certificates were issued with the badges.

General Service Badge

Eligibility and Criteria

On Friday, March 29th, 1940 Canada's Administrator in Council, W. Duff, signed Order in Council P.C.1022. This established the War Service Badge "Service" Class. This was for members of the Naval, Military or Air Forces of Canada who have declared their willingness, or who have engaged, to serve in any of the said forces on active service beyond Canada and Overseas, during the present war, and who have been honourably ceased to serve on active service:

RCAF Reserve Badge

Description

White metal 1.1 inches x 1 inch with screwback. The RCAF Reserve badge was issued in two sizes. The larger size (illustrated) was serial numbered. The smaller size was not. These badges were manufactured by Birks, Breadner and Scully.

Navy Class A Badge

Eligibility and Criteria

When the Order in Council P.C. 777 re-designated the Candian Expeditionary Force (CEF) War Badges and created a special Class A War Service Badge for issue only to those men who served at the Front (ie. on the Western Front) the majority members of Canada's Naval Services were excluded.
