Photos of brothers Edgar and Allan Gifford and their mother Elizabeth Scott Gifford appeared in the Toronto Evening Telegram on May 4th, 1915. The photos were accompanied by a lengthy article on the Gifford family as well as extracts from letters home from the war zone. Pte. Allan Gifford enlisted with the 1st Canadian Contingent at Valcartier Camp (Quebec) on September 21st, 1914. He indicated that he had 9 years prior experience with the Queen's Own Rifles. Allan Gifford was born in Toronto, Ontario. Pte. Edgar Gifford enlisted at Valcartier on September 22nd, 1914. He stated that he had 16 years prior experience in the Canadian militia.
