Lancaster I ME726 of 576 (RAF) Sqn. took off at 22:08 from its base at Elsham Wolds on a Gardening (Mining) operation in Kiel Bay.
The Lancaster was attacked by a German night fighter over Assens and crashed in the village of Gamtofte on the island of Fyn at 00:50 hours. It fell in the garden of the vicarage and one of the mines onboard exploded.
The Wehrmacht buried the remains in Assens cemetery on 16/5 1944 at 23:00 hours without ecclesiastical assistance.
The crew were F/Lt (P) Ernest J. Presland DFC, P/O (P) Albert E. Slade, Sgt (FE) Alan W. Knapp, F/O (N) Mark L. Abramson RCAF, F/O (AB) Charles Ashcroft, Sgt (W/Op) Benjamin J. Hudson, Sgt (AG) Robert E. Leatham and Sgt (AG) Arthur G. Wright DFM.

A beautiful monument was installed in 2015 at the Jewish Community Cemetery on Bank Street, honouring those brave men of the Ottawa Jewish Community who fought and lost their lives in war. The three panel granite monument lists Ottawa community members who served and fell in the Great War, World War II, Israeli War of Independence and while on active duty with the Israeli Army.
