He was Pilot on Lancaster III PB527 of 405 (RCAF) Sqdn which took off 16 Sept. 1944 at 22.35 from Gransden Lodge on an operation to Kiel, Germany. The aircraft failed to return and is thought to have crashed in the North Sea.

The body of one other crew member was found: F/S (WAG) Alan W. Gowdey, RAF, was buried in Sønderho cemetery on 17 June 1945 after having been buried by the Wehrmacht on the beach near Sønderho in the fall of 1944. It is not known where the body of F/L Long was found.
The bodies of Canadian WO2 (AG) John Raike and the RAF crew were not found and their names are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
They are: Sgt (FE) Ronald I. York, F/L (N) Robert Brook DFC, P/O (AB) Gordon J. Edwards DFC, F/S (WO) William D. Leavesley.
