Chief Warrant Officer (Retired) Clifford Downey CD

Chief Warrant Officer (Retired) Clifford Downey is a Veteran nominated for his contributions to the Veterans community through a number of organizations.

Since 1980, he has been offering assistance and support to Veterans and their families during the bereavement process. He has assisted with funeral arrangements, offered support and financial advice to grieving families, and ensured benefits for survivors. CWO Downey has also liaised with government agencies on behalf of families; writing letters, completing forms, and requesting updates on claims. He has helped “hundreds” submit claims to Veterans Affairs Canada and has been instrumental in securing benefits for most.

He was President of the Retired Sappers Association from 1995-2007. He ensured members of the Corps of Royal Canadian Engineers were kept informed. He was responsible for maintaining contact lists, organizing the annual formal dinner, brunch and parade, and tracked all finances, donating surplus money appropriately.

From 2012-2015, he was Vice-President of the Unit Mess at former CFB Chilliwack. He organized weekly meetings and fundraisers, including the weekly meat draws and monthly golf tournaments. The group was self-supported and funds raised after expenses were donated to local charities.

CWO Downey was also Director of the Military Historical Society in Chilliwack for five years and a member of the Legion for 48 years.
