Nomination Process

Complete the form in full. If information is missing, we may contact you and provide you the opportunity to resubmit. Please note that incomplete nominations will not be assessed.

Submit your nomination by email or by mail to the following address:

Deadline

We accept nominations for the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation all year.
We assess nomination packages:

  • received by January 31 for the current year, and
  • received after January 31 for the following year.

Selection Process

The Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation Advisory Committee, whose members include representatives from Veterans Affairs Canada and external organizations, recommends recipients for this award to the Minister.

Committee members cannot nominate or be nominated for this Commendation while they serve on the committee. If a close associate, colleague, or relative of a committee member is nominated for an award, that member cannot evaluate or comment on the nomination.

The Department of Veterans Affairs administers the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation.
Nominations are reviewed in two steps:

  1. Administrative review
    We review all nominations for completeness and clarity. We may contact you if more information is required.
     
  2. Assessment of merit
    The Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation Advisory Committee meets annually to review the nominations and recommend recipients to the Minister of Veterans Affairs who makes the final decision. The selection process is non-partisan and merit-based.

Veterans Affairs Canada and the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation Advisory Committee members keep nominations confidential. For privacy reasons, we are unable to discuss the status of a nomination or the reason why a particular nomination was unsuccessful.

As a nominator, please keep your submission confidential.  

Announcing Recipients

Typically, the Minister of Veterans Affairs presents recipients with their Commendation at a ceremony. With the recipient’s permission, we publish their picture receiving the award and their citation on this website.

We also issue a news release, which includes the recipients’ names, for each presentation ceremony.
