Philip M. Lyons

Mr. Lyons is a Veteran of the Second World War Battle of the Atlantic. Following the war, Mr. Lyons began to develop a photographic and descriptive inventory of all cenotaphs and war memorials in the Winnipeg area. His collection grew to include photos of 450 monuments or memorials and 78 pages of text. For a quarter century, Mr. Lyons continued to update his inventory, becoming an expert resource to governments and organizations doing research in this field. In 2001, to ensure the continuity of this laudable project, Mr. Lyons donated his inventory to the Government of Manitoba's Historic Resources Branch, which now updates and preserves his extensive work. On the fiftieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War, Mr. Lyons produced a postcard depicting a monument in Winnipeg, and donated thousands of the cards to the Government of Manitoba for distribution to various schools and organizations in support of Remembrance Day projects.
