Son of Oswald Stuart Yates and Elizabeth Yates, of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Brother of Joan, James, William and Richard. His sister Joan de Cotret shared her memories of her brother. 'Norman was a good tennis player - won Junior Tennis Championship - loved country living - enjoyed all sports: skiing, tennis, swimming. He went to D'Arcy McGee High School in Montreal. As a young man, we lived in St. Eustache sur-le-Lac, Quebec (now known as Deux Montagnes, Quebec) and although well populated during the summer it was quite lovely in winter. He loved his family dearly and he and and I were very close as we shared a large group of friends, both male and female. I sometimes tagged along too much and he would give me his warm gloves while skiing when my fingers were cold and icy. He was said to have done the most sit-ups during an exercise at the Lachine Depot. Flight Sergeant Yates shares a gravemarker with his grandfather and grandmother, Mr. William and Elizabeth Crowder, grave number 9A1649 at Cote des Neiges Cemetery, Montreal, Quebec.'

MALTA MEMORIAL Malta

The MALTA MEMORIAL is situated in the area of Floriana and is easily identified by the Golden Eagle which surmounts the column. It stands outside the King's Gate, the main entrance to Valletta.

The Memorial takes the form of a column fifteen metres high of travertine marble from Tivoli in the Sabine Hills near Rome, incised with a a light reticulated pattern and surmounted by a gilded bronze eagle two metres high. The column stands on a circular base around which the names are commemorated on bronze panels.

The MALTA MEMORIAL, built on a site generously provided by the Government of Malta, commemorates those who lost their lives whilst serving with the Commonwealth Air Forces flying from bases in Austria, Italy, Sicily, islands of the Adriatic and Mediterranean, Malta, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, West Africa, Yugoslavia and Gibraltar, and who have no known grave.

The bravery of the people of the island of Malta between the years 1940 - 1942 was honoured with the unique award of the George Cross.
