Mercantile Marine War Medal

Context

This First World War medal was authorized for Canadians in the Canadian Gazette on 08 May 1920. There were 624 issued to Canadians and 133,135 awarded in total.

Eligibility and Criteria

The medal was awarded to those who received the British War Medal and also served at sea on at least one voyage through a danger zone. The medal was also awarded to those who had served at sea for not less than six months between 04 August 1914 and 11 November 1918.

British War Medal

Context

This First World War medal was authorized on 26 July 1919. It was possible to receive this medal alone but all gallantry medals would receive the British War Medal (BWM) and the Victory Medal (VM) as well.

1914-1915 Star

Context

This First World War medal was authorized in December 1918. This medal is always issued with the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Eligibility and Criteria

The 1914-1915 Star was awarded to all who saw service in any theatre of war against the central powers between 5 August 1914 and 31 December 1915 except those eligible for the 1914 Star. Many Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) small ships were entitled to this star, as Canada considered 'overseas' to be service beyond the three mile limit.

Context

This First World War medal was authorized in April 1917, and the bar on 19 October 1919. It is often called the 'MONS STAR'.

King’s South Africa Medal

Context

This South Africa War medal was authorized in 1902. The medal was always issued with the Queen's Medal.

Eligibility and Criteria

The King's South Africa Medal was awarded to all troops who served in South Africa on or after 01 January 1901, and completed 18 months service before 01 June 1902.

Description

A circular, silver medal, 1.42 inches in diameter. Indented block or sloping capitals were used for the recipient's name. A plain, straight, suspender is attached to the medal with a double-toed claw for mounting.

Queen's South Africa Medal

Context

This South African War medal was authorized in 1900.

Eligibility and Criteria

The medal was awarded to all who served in South Africa between 11 October 1899 and 31 May 1902.

Description

A circular, silver medal, 1.42 inches in diameter. For mounting, a plain, straight suspender is attached to the medal with a double-toe claw.

The obverse shows a crowned and veiled effigy of the Queen Victoria, facing left, with the legend VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX.

Egypt Medal

Context

The Egypt Medal was authorized on 5 November 1884.

Eligibility and Criteria

This medal was awarded to members of the Army and Navy who took part in the Egyptian Campaigns between 1882 and 1889.

Description

A circular, silver medal, 1.42 inches in diameter.. A plain, straight suspender attaches to the medal with a double-toe claw for mounting.

The obverse has a diademed, veiled effigy of Queen Victoria faces left, and the legend: VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX

Gulf and Kuwait Medal

Context

The Gulf and Kuwait Medal recognizes the participation of CF members deployed or in direct support of the operations against Iraq during the Gulf war. The medal is awarded to those employed during the build up of troops before the beginning of hostilities, and a bar is awarded for those deployed during the actual war.

Defence Medal

Context

The Defence Medal was a Second World War medal which was established on 16 August 1945.

North West Canada Medal

Context

The creation of a medal for members of Canadian militia forces who helped suppress the 1885 North West Rebellion was authorized in August 1885. Its design was approved in October 1885.
