Having been awarded the Military Medal in January 1917 one month later on 7th, Paul collapsed malnourished and been admitted to a rest station, weighing 44 kilograms (7 stone). Shipped to England in August he was sent to Western General Hospital in Liverpool, then on 21st, Paul was diagnosed with bronchitis. The situation remained critical when transferred onto the Glenart Castle hospital ship which set sail for Halifax Nova Scotia on 14 November 1917.
Paul suffered further weight loss despite being hand fed Private Paul Newsham died on 23 November, 1917 his body is then embalmed and buried at sea with men from RCR and nursing staff in attendance.
