Fils de Henry H. et Annie Botterell, de Woodroffe, Ontario. Frère de Henry John Lawrence Botterell, pilote de chasse canadien ayant servi dans la RNAS puis dans la RAF, durant la Première Guerre mondiale. Quand il mourut à l'âge de 106 ans, Anciens Combattants Canada était d'avis qu'il avait été le dernier pilote encore vivant au monde à avoir connu la Grande Guerre.

CIMETIÈRE MILITAIRE DE LIJSSENTHOEK Belgique
Le cimetière militaire de Lijssenthoek est situé à environ 12 kilomètres à l'ouest du cimetière municipal d'Ypres, sur la Boescheepseweg, une route qui part de la route N308 reliant Ypres à Poperinge.
À partir du centre-ville d'Ypres, rendez-vous sur la Poperingseweg par la Elverdingsestraat en passant au-dessus de deux petits carrefours giratoires sur la J. Capronstraat. La Poperingseweg est le prolongement de la J. Capronstraat et débute après un important passage à niveau. En arrivant à Poperinge, tournez à gauche sur la route périphérique de Poperinge (R33).
Suivez cette route et tournez à gauche à l'intersection avec la route N38, la Frans Vlaanderenweg. Parcourez 800 mètres sur la route N38 et tournez à gauche sur la Lenestraat. Tournez tout de suite après à droite, sur la Boescheepseweg. Le cimetière se trouve à 2 kilomètre du côté droit de cette route.
