Wellington HE 177 of 428 Sqdn had taken off at 22.07 hours on a mine laying trip. The pilot tried to land at RCAF East Moor on its return but overshot the runway and crashed at 02.35 hrs. Four were killed in the crash. The aircraft ended up at right angles to the runway in the fields beyond the end of the runway.
Along with F/S Grenon were the following crew: F/S (P) Alexander Simpson, 21, from Oxbow, Sask.; F/O (BA) Arlie B. Douglas, 31, from Edmonton; F/S (N) Stanley Frewen, 23, from Winnipeg.
The rear gunner, Sgt. A. J. Howes, survived the crash.
