Son of Arthur Paul Chattell DSO, MID, and Mary Eileen Gifford of Edmonton, Alberta.
He served as a Major in the 49th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force from 1916 to 1919. Combat wounded in France, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and a Mention in Dispatches, in 1918. He also served, before 1916, with the 101st Regiment Edmonton Fusiliers and the 9th Machine Gun of the unit as Captain.
He was Lance Corporal in the Edmonton Fusiliers (MG) - NPAM - from 17 October 1939 to 3 June 1940.
He served in Canada and Great Britain. Returning from a mission, his bombardier Wellington crashed in the trees of Preston Deanery, near Northampton, Northamptonshire, England. Only the rear gunner survived.
