Son of Alexander Peter Carew and Julia Ayre, of Newfoundland.
On September 3, 1944, she was on her way to Newfoundland without escort when she was torpedoed at 8:45 a.m. off Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, by U-541 and sank with 14 crew members and one gunner, position 46°15'N/58°05'W. The captain, 12 sailors and a gunner were rescued by the Canadian corvette HMCS Barrie (K138) who landed them in St. John's, Newfoundland.
