His real surname is Nielson.
Son of Oscar Nielson (alias Neilson) and Susannah Lloyd of South Shields, Durham, England. A merchant seaman and cook, Oscar lost his life on 16 April 1942 when his ship, the SS Empire Howard, sailing with convoy PQ-14, was torpedoed at 2:45 pm by U-403 and sunk north-west of North Cape, position 73°48'N/21°50'E. Oscar was from Stockholm, Sweden.
On 3 September 1944, she was on her way to Newfoundland without escort when she was torpedoed at 8:45 am off Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, by U-541 and sank with 14 crew members and one gunner, position 46°15'N/58°05'W. The captain, 12 sailors and a gunner were rescued by the Canadian corvette HMCS Barrie (K138) who landed them in St. John's, Newfoundland.
