On 5 September 1942, the U-513 entered the port of Wabana Roads, Newfoundland, where cargo ships were anchored. At 4.15 pm, the Waganaga was torpedoed and sank in three minutes with 27 crew members and 3 gunners. The captain, 10 sailors and 3 gunners were rescued by a coastal vessel and landed at Lance Cove on Bell Island, Newfoundland.
