Baptized Joseph-Octave Gallant. Son of Étienne-L. Gallant and Marie-Rose Gallant, of St-Alexis-de-Matapédia, Gaspésie, Québec. He stated being born on the 23rd when he enlisted. The first name Étienne was not inscribed on the baptism record, but was used later.
Octave was the third of a family of thirteen and he enlisted at the same time as his brother Joseph, the oldest sibling. Both served together with the 22nd Battalion and arrived in Belgium on 25 November 1915. Nine months later, in France, they took part in the glorious assault of Courcelette and both paid an heavy price: Octave was killed and Joseph severely wounded to a shoulder, and was evacuated eight months in England.
COURCELETTE BRITISH CEMETERY Somme, France
Courcelette is a village some 10 kilometres north-east of the town of Albert, just off the D929 road to Bapaume. The Courcelette British Cemetery is approximately 1 kilometre west of the village on the south side of a track, suitable for cars, from the secondary road from Courcelette to Pozieres. The route is signposted in the village.
