Engagement and initiatives

Outreach and coordination between Veterans Affairs Canada and partners on issues related to the well-being and recognition of Indigenous Veterans are being directed through the Indigenous Veterans Engagement Team (IVET).

The team was created to ensure all Indigenous Veterans and still-serving members of the CAF and RCMP, as well as their families, are aware of the benefits and services provided by Veterans Affairs Canada that may be available to them.

The team achieves this through direct outreach and by working with Indigenous partners to identify and collaborate on actions to meet the needs of and engage with Indigenous Veterans.

First Nations Veterans

The Minister of Veterans Affairs and chair of the Assembly of First Nations’ Veteran Council signed a co-developed Letter of Understanding (LOU). This partnership builds on previous efforts to address long-standing systemic barriers to accessing Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) programs and services.

Métis Veterans

The Métis National Council and the Manitoba Métis Federation work collaboratively with IVET and VAC area offices on the issues and priorities for Métis Veterans.

Inuit Veterans

VAC area office staff and the Indigenous Veteran Engagement Team have been traveling to Inuit Nunangat to support Inuit Veterans and Canadian Rangers and their families. They participate in community events and trade shows and raise awareness of supports available to them.

Please contact us if you:

  • Want to invite the team to an upcoming meeting or event,
  • Would like to request a presentation on Veterans benefits and services, or
  • Want to share your story or to suggest ways that Veterans Affairs Canada can improve how it provides services and benefits to First Nations, Inuit and Métis Veterans
